The federal reserve today issued new Truth in Lending rules to protect borrowers. The rules are aimed at promoting responsible lending and will affect all banks and mortgage brokers. Lenders will now be required to verify that borrowers can afford their monthly payments and future higher payments on variable interest rate loans for mortgages and home equity loans. Excessive refinancing fees will also be prohibited.

 The Internal Revenue Service is warning taxpayers of phishing scams over the past couple of months related to the stimulus rebate checks. Since May 2008, over 700 incidents of phishing have been reported to the IRS. Nearly 1,600 scams have already been reported in 2008. The usual scams involve tax refunds, however economic stimulus rebates are the main target right now. Most of the incidents originate from emails pretending to be from the IRS asking for personal information before receiving a rebate check.

 Credit Unions do not have offices on every corner across the country, like a nationwide bank, or do they? Belonging to a credit union, instead of a multi-national bank, does not mean you have fewer services with less convenience. Credit Unions are just more creative about how and where services are offered to members. So when you are traveling, you do not have to give up the convenience of your credit union's services, whether you need to make a deposit, withdrawal, or cash a check. Stop by one of the thousands of credit union "branches" nationwide!

 The title of this article is not a misprint. It is still July, but the holidays are a few short months away. If you will not be financially prepared this year, you may have trouble squeezing extra money out of your budget if oil continues to go up (along with everything else). Relying on credit during the holidays is the last thing a financially responsible consumer wants to do. Charging the holidays is convenient, but you will spend (pun intended!) the beginning of 2009 with more bills than you already have now and next July will not look so good.
